Summers With Grandma : Family Poetry

written by Poet : Cheylinn1

Grandma had lived through the great depression,

so she had learned how to skrimp and save;

but we always felt rich with our grandma,

paid in hugs and kisses when we would behave.

She baked pies and cakes for a local restaurant,

and fresh donuts were made early in the morn;

the most delicious smells came from her kitchen,

as we laid in our beds all toasty warm.

On the weekends we'd pick blueberries for pies,

we'd pick raspberries, rhubarb and cherries;

sometimes peaches, apples, maybe apricots,

as well as the sweetest home grown strawberries.

In the evening she'd watch Lawrence Welk,

or would sit down and read a good book;

while I'd watch Perry Mason with grandpa,

or made potholders with loops and a hook.

When at grandmas house we went to bed early,

you needed to rest after such a long day;

in the morning I helped grandma in the kitchen,

or I would sit close by and quietly play.

Grandma was a devoted Christian woman,

through her you were taught wrong from right;

but the one thing I remember most about her,

were the hugs that I would get every night.

It's been some time now since she went to Heaven,

yet in my mind she's never  far away;

she's as close to me as a loving thought,

and through my memory I can see her each day.
