Oklahoma Days
He was born in a town south of McAllister,
spent summers on the reservation;
where he learned the family history,
as apart of the Cherokee nation.
He slept in grandma's feather bed,
wrapped in quilts that she'd handmade;
spent the day looking for arrowheads,
in the Oklahoma hills where he played.
He learned to hunt, he learned to fish,
knew when and where to drop a line;
he watched as his grandma churned butter,
and grind cornmeal until it was fine.
She taught him about the tribal ways,
vision quests and about the Great Spirit;
He was taught to protect this land,
as well as everything that's in it.
His skin was bronze, his eyes steel gray,
his heart was filled with pride;
and while he may have left Oklahoma,
Oklahoma lives on inside.
