I'm not a Poet : Def Poetry

written by Poet : Brazilian_Barbie

I am not a poet.

I break hearts, make art, cut ties, save lives, speak truth, and inspire the youth, but I am not a poet.

I write in blood, cry floods, and breathe symphonies into life.

I walk gently, speak strongly, and fight apathy and strife, but I am not a poet.

I don’t scribble words, I write dreams, carving lyrical pathways into the road of life, catching the masses by surprise and even changing some people’s minds, but I am not a poet.

Like the commercial says, in life, there are passengers and there are drivers,
But I choose to stay behind the wheel, because I can’t come to terms with this life that we call real.

‘Cause there’s no war without the fighting,
No corruption without theft,
Theft of word, of thought, of conscience
Until thin air is all that’s left.

There’s no Fallujah without bullets
No politicians without lies.
And no weapons of mass destruction
except for the ones within our minds.

We must learn to use our voices before we can ever truly speak
That’s why God invented poets,
So, at least in words, we could be free.

So this one’s for the lovers,
The ones who live with heart.
Because we can’t truly know our present until we understand our start.

And this one’s for the fighters,
The ones who know no shame:
Sweet surrender’s here to save you from the days you’ve spent in pain.

And this one’s for the dreamers,
The ones with every care.
Don’t give up on steadfast hoping
And keep your fists high in the air.

This is a verbal revolution.
To reclaim our right to be
more than the media’s expectation of what
defines success stories.

We will surpass these middle ages
By remembering our minds
And as these words leap off the pages
I hope your spirit’s not benign.

This is a call for something sacred
A prayer that travels in the wind
Delivered from the lips of angels
To hearts of humble men.

Don’t forget these words I’ve spoken.
Guard every syllable I say
Because I might not be a poet
But I swear I’m on my way
